In GTA 5, losing the police was a minimap exercise. Duck into an alley, watch the blue vision cones sweep past, wait out a short cooldown, and you were clean enough to walk straight in front of an officer who had forgotten your face entirely. That routine does not exist in GTA 6, because the police are not on the minimap at all.

Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” showed the replacement on August 27, 2026 without explaining any of it. The wanted stars in the top right of the screen change colour four separate times, a row of small icons appears and disappears beneath them, and nothing on screen tells you what any of it means.

Everything below comes from Rockstar’s own footage plus two on the record preview sessions with Rob Nelson, co-head of development at Rockstar North. Where a claim rests on a single preview rather than on published Rockstar material, it says so.

Key Takeaways

  • Confirmed: the wanted system now has two layers. Stars tell you where the police are relative to you. Heat indicators, the icons underneath, tell you what the police know about you.
  • Confirmed: there are four star states, not two. Solid white (direct line of sight), flashing white (line of sight broken, still hunting), hollow (an alarm tripped, no description exists), and red (you have lost them, but the description survives).
  • Confirmed: crimes only reach the police if a witness reports them or an alarm goes off.
  • Confirmed: police no longer appear on the minimap. You find them with Focus, which shows them through walls.
  • The six star wanted level returns, and at six stars the search goes map wide instead of staying inside a circle.
  • Watch the full 26 minute video on Rockstar’s Newswire for the chase sequences described below.

Do the Police Still Show Up on the Minimap in GTA 6?

Status: Confirmed. No. Police officers and their vision cones have been removed from the minimap entirely, and this single change is the one everything else in the system hangs off (VICE, 2026-08-27).

Rob Nelson was direct about why, speaking to the Australian creator TGG, who was flown to Rockstar North in Edinburgh in July 2026 and watched Nelson play roughly three hours of the game. “It can be harder, but it’s fun,” Nelson said. “Depending on the wanted level, you have to think more. You can’t just play the game and avoid the little vision cones anymore. This time, you have to use focus” (TGG, 2026-08-29).

Focus is the ability both Jason and Lucia carry, and used during a chase it reveals police positions through walls. The information is still there; you now have to spend something to get it, and look at the world rather than at a corner of the screen.

One smaller replacement is worth knowing about. The Extended Look shows a red and blue flash at the bottom edge of the screen indicating the direction police are approaching from. It does not tell you how many, or how close.

What Are the Wanted Star States in GTA 6?

Status: Confirmed. There are four, and they are not interchangeable. Most summaries of the reveal treat flashing stars and red stars as the same situation. They are not, and mistaking one for the other will get you caught.

Star state What it means What to do about it
Solid white The police have direct line of sight on you right now Break line of sight before anything else
Flashing white Line of sight is broken, but the pursuit is still active Keep building distance and start clearing indicators
Hollow An alarm tripped and police were dispatched, but nobody has a description of you Leave calmly. You have not been identified
Red You have lost them. Only heat remains inside the search zone Clear your indicators, then leave the zone

Red is counterintuitive, so it is worth stating plainly: red stars are the best wanted state you can have while still being wanted. They mean the chase is over. The police know roughly who they are looking for, but not where you are. Nelson described this to TGG as the state you reach after successfully losing a pursuit, at which point what remains is heat rather than an active hunt (TGG, 2026-08-29).

The hollow star sequence in the Extended Look is the clearest illustration of the whole system. Lucia leaves a bank with hollow stars and no indicators underneath them, rides straight past a police unit, flips them off, and nothing happens. An alarm told the police that a crime had occurred. No witness gave them a person to look for.

Worth flagging honestly: Rockstar has not published this taxonomy itself. The four state names and their meanings come from the Extended Look footage read alongside Nelson’s own explanation to TGG. Community summaries circulating on Facebook and YouTube disagree with each other on the flashing versus red distinction. The reading above is the one the developer quotes support.

What Are Heat Indicators and How Do You Clear Each One?

Status: Confirmed. Heat indicators are the small icons that appear directly under your wanted stars, and each one is a piece of information the police currently hold about you. Six have been identified across the Extended Look footage and the preview sessions.

Heat indicator What the police have How you clear it
CCTV camera A store or street camera caught your face during the crime Destroy the footage before you leave the building
Two person icon They know they are looking for a pair, not an individual Split Jason and Lucia up and send them different ways
Outfit Your clothing is in the description Change into a second outfit stored in your personal vehicle
Appearance Your face is in the description Wear a mask or helmet before the crime, or change your appearance after
Weapon The gun you were seen carrying is in the description Stash or drop that specific weapon
Vehicle They have the make and model you are driving Torch it, switch cars, or use a pay and spray

The convenience store robbery frame in the Extended Look shows five of these active at once: CCTV, couple, outfits, appearance, and weapons. The sixth, the vehicle icon, appears during the Raul Bautista bank job getaway that follows.

The part that matters more than the list is the persistence. Nelson told TGG the team built this specifically to break the old pattern: “We wanted to get past that thing we used to have where you could lose the cops instantaneously and then they forget about you instantly. And we wanted them to have a bit more persistent memory” (TGG, 2026-08-29).

Clearing some indicators but not others does not reset you. It narrows what the police are working with. In the Extended Look getaway, Lucia torches the car with a molotov and the group switches to a van, which drops the vehicle icon and lets a police car drive right past them. Their outfits, faces and weapons are still on file. Walk close enough to an officer with those still active and the chase restarts.

Four heat indicators in one frame: two people, two outfits, two faces, two weapons. Each one is a separate thing the police have to be made to forget.

Splitting up is the fastest of these to act on, and one reason switching between Jason and Lucia is instant rather than menu driven.

Does Someone Have to Witness the Crime?

Status: Confirmed. Yes. A crime nobody sees and no alarm reports does not exist as far as the police are concerned.

This is the single biggest structural change, and Nelson stated it directly to IGN during their own preview session: “The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law” (IGN, 2026-08-27).

There are three routes by which the police learn anything, per Nelson’s account to TGG. A witness phones it in. A robbery alarm trips. Or you steal a vehicle carrying a tracker that reports its own position (TGG, 2026-08-29).

What if you commit a crime with nobody around?

Then nothing happens, at least at the moment of the crime. The wanted level is not a meter that fills when you break a law, it is the output of somebody observing you and choosing to report it. That is why the indicators are so specific: they are the details an actual witness gave.

How specific gets unnerving fast. During El Rubius’s preview session, NPCs stuck in a traffic jam recognised Lucia’s clothing and her vehicle and called the police themselves, without any scripted prompt (TGG, 2026-09-04, summarising that session). Anyone on the street is a potential witness, and what they saw is what ends up in your description.

Status: Confirmed (single source preview). At one to five stars the search is two concentric zones anchored to the crime scene. At six stars it becomes map wide.

TGG was shown the geometry during his Rockstar North session: a dark red inner circle centred on the crime, and a larger, lighter circle around it. Getting outside both is the reliable escape; clearing only the inner one makes things easier without finishing the job (TGG, 2026-08-28).

The detail nobody else has picked up is that the zone is attached to the crime, not to you. After a small store robbery the police hold a perimeter around the store itself, in case you come back, and TGG watched exactly that happen while Nelson was playing (TGG, 2026-08-29).

How to Lose the Cops in GTA 6

Status: Confirmed; the cop car tracker, trunk loadout and tyre damage below rest on single preview sessions. Clear your indicators, then leave the zone, in roughly that order of importance. Distance alone will not do it any more, because distance does not change what the police know about you.

The working sequence, assembled from the preview material:

  1. Break line of sight. While the stars are solid white, nothing else you do matters much.
  2. Get out of the search circles. Both of them if you can manage it.
  3. Work the indicator list. Vehicle first, since it is the one broadcasting your position.
  4. Deal with the rest before you go near police again. Outfit, face, weapon.

The vehicle has three answers: torch it, switch it, or take it to a pay and spray. Pay and sprays are returning in GTA 6, but they are progression unlocks rather than a service available everywhere from the first hour (TGG, 2026-08-30).

The car is usually the first indicator to deal with, because it is the one actively telling police where you are.

Stealing a police car is now close to the worst option available

This one inverts twenty years of GTA muscle memory. Every police vehicle carries a tracker, so driving one hands the police your exact position for as long as you are in it. Removing a tracker requires a fence that has unlocked the capability, which you do not have early on (TGG, 2026-08-28).

What they are good for is supply. Each carries a two handed weapon in the trunk, a shotgun or an assault rifle, and often body armour (TGG, 2026-08-29). Cop cars are loot now, not transport.

Two other things make escapes harder. Police shoot out tyres, and a blown tyre handles considerably worse than in GTA 5, while Leonida’s streets are narrower than Los Santos and carry heavier traffic (IGN, 2026-08-27). Abandoning the car and sprinting, or grabbing one of the electric scooters scattered around the city (TGG, 2026-09-04), is a legitimate strategy rather than a last resort.

What Happens After the Chase Ends?

Status: Confirmed. The stars go. The description does not.

Red stars are the end of the pursuit and the beginning of the awkward part. The police have stopped chasing and still hold every detail a witness gave them, so walking past an officer in the original outfit restarts the chase from a standing position.

If you do get caught, or killed, you lose the cash you are carrying. Money in your bank account is safe, and loot in your duffel bag has to reach a fence before it becomes anything at all (TGG, 2026-08-28). That is a real reason to run rather than fight, and how money works in GTA 6 covers the rest.

What is genuinely not known yet, and it is worth saying rather than guessing: nobody has published how heat decays on its own over time, whether there is a jail or hospital sequence after a bust, or whether bribery or a lawyer mechanic exists. None of the previews covered it, and no Rockstar material addresses it. Any specific search radius in metres or square kilometres you see quoted is a community estimate, not a published figure.

Do NPCs Call the Cops Just for Carrying a Gun?

Status: Confirmed. Not for carrying. For how you carry.

Nelson laid out the escalation ladder to TGG in detail. “The reactions are much more nuanced than before,” he said. “So, if you’ve got a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it and they react and start moving away from you. The more guns you carry and the way you carry them matters. If cops see you, they will give you a warning” (TGG, 2026-08-29).

Nelson’s stated reasoning was that the old behaviour had stopped being credible: “One of the things in GTA 5, if Michael was walking down the street with a carbine, no one does anything. If you aim it, everybody freaks out. And it just doesn’t make sense at this resolution where you want the world to react in a credible way.”

Aim at them and the ladder finishes. IGN’s session showed NPCs either cowering or drawing concealed weapons of their own (IGN, 2026-08-27).

Behind all of this sits a criminal profile that shifts with how you handle situations. Nelson’s commentary during a failed store robbery captures the calculation: “You’re gambling. If they come in, am I going to shoot them? Is it going to affect my criminal profile? Do I care? Don’t I?”

Frequently Asked Questions

Will GTA 6 have a 6 star wanted level?

Yes. The six star wanted level returns, and it is reportedly hard to reach. At six stars the police abandon the circular search zones and search the entire map for you, which makes both escaping and clearing the heat afterwards significantly harder (TGG, 2026-08-28).

Will cops remember you in GTA 6?

Yes, and that is the point of the redesign. Heat indicators persist after your wanted stars clear. The police keep the description a witness gave them until you actively change the things in it: your outfit, your face, your weapon, your vehicle, and whether you are travelling as a pair.

Can you get a wanted level if nobody sees you?

No, unless an alarm goes off or a vehicle tracker reports itself. Crimes have to be observed and reported to register at all.

What do red stars mean in GTA 6?

Red stars mean you have lost the police but are still inside their search zone, and they still hold a description of you. That is not the same as flashing white, which means the pursuit is still live.

Do police appear on the GTA 6 minimap?

No. Officers and their vision cones were removed from the minimap. Use Focus to see them through walls, and watch the red and blue directional flash at the screen edge.

What This Actually Changes

  • Two layers, not one. Stars are position. Heat is identity.
  • Nothing registers unless it is witnessed or alarmed, so the world’s NPCs are now part of the wanted system rather than scenery around it.
  • Six indicators, six specific counter actions, and partial fixes leave you identifiable.
  • The search zone is anchored to the crime scene, not to you, and at six stars there is no zone to leave.
  • Losing the stars is not the same as being clean.

The game does not arrive until November 19, 2026, and this page gets updated when the next preview wave answers what is still open.
